If there is one thing we can count on in life, it is change; expected or unexpected, wanted or unwanted. Perhaps it is a loss/trauma, a difficult transition, a depressed or anxious mood, a new diagnosis or new symptoms, chronic pain, becoming a caregiver, family changes, parenting a child-it can be anything that alters your life plans, your relationships, expectations, sense of self, and daily functioning. In some cases, it can cause the overuse of substances to manage the pain we feel. Together, we can foster change and take concrete steps to achieve your goals and identify solutions that work best for everyone involved.
I bring to my practice not only rigorous academic training, but the wisdom and humility of over 26 years of experience. I have a deep respect for the therapeutic process, the use of evidenced based practices, in conjunction with the importance of the forming of a trusting relationship between patient and therapist. I trust that process to effect change. Along with compassion and experienced listening, I am an active therapist, using humor and patience as we understand not only the different reasons that brought you to therapy, but what steps you might take to change and develop effective ways to manage and tolerate distress. I focus on providing patients with coping strategies and skills training to help them manage anxiety, depression, psychosis, social struggles, addiction, and those experiencing difficulty in social and familial relationships. Tools include, but are not limited to, learning relaxation techniques, distress tolerance skills, assertiveness skills, mindfulness, open and direct communication skills, incorporating recovery strategies and how to, “teach others how to treat you.”
I am particularly interested in supporting individuals, couples and families dealing with issues of depression, anxiety, unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors, stress management and the impacts of these issues on the individual, families and relationships. I specialize in working with children through adults, focusing on alleviating emotional distress and making real change in daily functioning and improving quality of life. I would be honored to work with you.
